Smoosh. It’s a fun word.

November 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So, it is nearly Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday ever.  I only say that because I love my grandmother’s cooking, especially her turkey and dressing and home-canned green beans.  Heaven.  Plus we get to go home and visit for more than a weekend, and my grandfather got out of the hospital this week so we will get to see him as well!  I can’t believe that he is out so soon.  He’s still got a long road of physical therapy and learning how to live with only one leg ahead of him, but he is otherwise in perfect physical and mental health.  I know I have said this before, but it really could have been SO much worse.  We are so blessed that all he lost was a leg.  He looks great, and has lost some much needed weight in his belly.  I am glad that our visit won’t be in a hospital room this year.

I’m going to the doctor next week.  Keep your fingers crossed that everything is going well.

I took today off from work to attempt to burn through some of my 100+ vacation hours I have still in queue.  That is not even counting my sick/personal hours, of which I have 80.  I can only carry over 40 hours of each, so I guess it’s 4-day weeks from here on out.  Next year I will manage my vacation and personal time more closely so I am not scrambling at the end of the year to use it or lose it.  Today has been spent relaxing, playing with my dogs, shopping, and now I have completed the first step of the Oreo ball making process.  My Oreo crumb and cream cheese mixture is chilling in the freezer as I type.  I am not looking forward to rolling it all into balls because it is messy.  Let me say, my KitchenAid stand mixer is the best investment of $150 I have ever made.  Before I got that, I had to smoosh the cream cheese through the Oreo crumbs with my hands, which meant my mixture was uneven and half of it remained underneath my fingernails when I was done smooshing.  With the paddle mixer attachment, I just turn it on, pause once to scrape the mixture off the paddle and reposition, then turn it on again and it is perfectly and evenly mixed.  I don’t even have to touch the mixture in this step anymore, which is great for my nails.  I am also going to try out a new method of coating the balls in almond bark.  I bought a wire cookie cooling rack in hopes that I can set the balls on the rack and just pour my melted almond bark on them and not have to dip them into a bowl.  It is messy and time consuming, and the melted almond bark always gets murky and Oreo-y after about 10 balls being dipped.  I hope this works out, because it will be so much easier to pour than dip.

That’s about all I have to say.

Veterans Day.

November 11, 2008 · 2 Comments

Today is Veterans Day.  You should do this every day like I do, but especially today, if you see someone in uniform be sure to stop for a second and thank them for the freedoms you are afforded because of their sacrifice and the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers.  Just this morning I passed by a group of about 20 soldiers, in fatigues with their weapons, walking down Peachtree Street followed by a military humvee and a police escort in front and back.  I rolled down my windows, drove about 2 mph, and shouted “thank you!” until I passed them.  It is very humbling to come in contact with the bravest of the brave, the best of the best, and see them actually get a little embarrassed when people thank them for keeping this country and the entire world safe.  “Just doin’ our job.”  So thank you, veterans and active servicemembers, for everything you do and have done for this country, for the world, for me.

And now for your viewing enjoyment, I present to you the finest in military precision, The United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.

Come what may…

I could not stay away from the election coverage, try as I did.  I don’t think I will be able to stay awake for much longer, but that’s okay.  I have said my prayers, and made my peace.  My parents lived through eight years of Bill Clinton, so hopefully we can make it through four years of Obama (shudder).  Chances are my own life won’t change very much.  My job is secure as long as I perform well, Zac’s job is safe (I don’t think Wal-Mart is going anywhere, much to the dismay of the left), I can pay for my house, I can pay for my car, I don’t need to rely on the government to buy my gas or groceries because I can do that myself, and as worried as I am about an Obama presidency, I still think this is the greatest country God ever gave man.  God was willing to spare Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of 10 righteous people, so I hope that He will spare this country from total collapse (under either presidency).  And now that the Southern Baptist in me has reared its head, I shall move on.

And now, “Bash Barack”:  Barack Obama has big goofy ears.  Couldn’t he get those things pinned back?  And Michelle looks like she is angry ALL THE TIME.  Her brow is in a permanent furrow.  Surely your life isn’t that bad, Michelle.  Your family has millions, and your husband is a candidate for president.  Can’t you give a sincere smile every now and again?

Anyway.  Either way it goes, I’m glad it’s over.  Maybe now I won’t have to hear Barry’s annoying voice ALL THE TIME now.  Unless he decides to further his cult of personality by doing daily addresses to his adoring worshippers.  I’m tired of the election.  I’m tired of blogging about it, I’m tired of reading your blogs about it, and I’d like to see what your lives and blogs post-election look like.  To my leftard readers, thanks for sticking with me even though we don’t agree.  Now maybe we can all get back to being friends.
